"march 16th...just around the corner"
i was just listening to "jesus on the radio" while finishing up some homework and i realized that march 16th is in fact two days away. i was wondering if anyone knew if the date march 16th actually has any signifigance or if it is just a random date that sounded good with the song. some friends and i were thinking of going up to waffel house at 5 a.m. does any else do anything on that magical date?

thanks,
matt

Yeah I am aware of the line Joe Song, dummy. I was just saying, "you are going to Waffle House at 5AM? I am not getting up that early." So try to look into the meaning of a statement before you start name calling; sometimes sarcasm is involved.

Dudes!

Not to get too deep, but I once read a theory that said that March 16, equal to 3/16 or 3:16 is equivalent to John 3:16, the Bible verse. The message in that bible verse is Jesus speaking as way to get to heaven.

Is that the intended message? I dunno
Am I propogating false info? Probably
Is it interesting to think about? Yes

That is all.

A long time fan...

At one point, I thought I read somewhere that it was a Wilco/Uncle Tupelo reference, A.M. being the name of a Wilco album, March 16-20, 1992 being the name of an Uncle Tupelo album and Jesus, Etc. being the name of a Wilco song. But I may be wrong.

Hmm...thats a pretty good theroy. I know that Guster has explained many many times that they are not a religous band and what not. Although with song about Jesus and Noah's Arc its not hard to see why people think this. Plus, I know Guster loves Wilco a lot.
I think Piper might be right, but thats the best part about music; songs can mean different things to different people.

I think bands shouldn't tell people what songs are about or why the wrote them. I got a chance to talk to Snow Patrol last summer (They were just so happy someone in the US knew them and this was before they became "big" or whatever) I was going to ask them about there hit song "Run" and asked what the "Light up, Light up" lyric (for any of you who have heard the song those lyrics just don't fit). But then I thought do I really want to know? Thus, I didn't ask them about it and I doubt they would have told me. I am still glad to this day I don't know what they lyric means. But from talking with them I think its about drugs - like all lyrics

Road Journal: 7/28/00 Darien Lakes NY

Saturday in Buffalo there was someone on the lawn with a GUSTER 3:16 sign that they painted onto a bedsheet or something. Brilliant. Thank you, whoever you were.

I remember seeing this in the Road Journal book, and had no clue what was so *brilliant* about it. (Raised in an atheist household; the only Biblical stuff I know I learned from 'Jeopardy')

i once heard, i think from some online guster interview, that the lyric was originally "singing on the radio" and it just happened to become jesus one day. interesting, but may throwout some of the religious ideas.

>>>From the studio journal march 23, 2002

And because the piano was in tune, we threw a bit of it on "The Joe Song" which we declared "finished" and which is now "mixed," but still needs a "title." I got in a lyrical tweak before we re-sang the first verse... changing "singing with the radio" to "Jesus on the radio." The song already sounded a bit (comment dit on en englais?) "Christian," with the three part harmonies and the strumming guitars and the banjo and the what-nots. It goes on the album right after our bible song, "Two at a Time."

The thing is, we love to play up the fact that some people think we're a Christian band. It's just so amusing. I have to leave the studio early Thursday night to make it to Pesach seder in Long Island.

20. "RE: march 16th...just around the corner"
I think about it being the day after the Ides of March, which is the day that Caesar was betrayed and stabbed to death by his peers (and could be likened to Jesus' story, though I know Jesus wasn't the original lyric). "Beware the Ides of March," said the soothsayer. Since the Ides means the 15th (or sometimes 13th) of the month, I decided to take this to a ridiculous extreme and look up the band The Ides of March who are known for "Vehicle": "I'm the friendly stranger in the black sedan won't you hop into my car/ got pictures got candy I'm a lovable man/ and I can take you to the nearest star/ I'm your vehicle baby/ I'll take you anywhere you want to go/ I'm your vehicle woman/ by now I'm sure you know that I love you need you gotta have you child/ Great God in heaven you know I love you" Having said this, I think the lyrics are meaningless but it's fun to dig for something that's not there.
