"Buying a guitar..."
What guitar is good for playing Guster music? Is the Alvarez RD8 a good guitar to begin with? or should I get a better guitar?

What guitars does Ryan play? What guitar is he playing Satellite on in Episode 3 of Joe's Place?

1. "RE: Buying a guitar..."
I have an Alvarez RD8C which I'm actually trying to sell- it's a great guitar to begin with, sounds great. The RD8 model won't have the cutaway, so you wont be able to play all the way up the neck, but i bet its a great guitar, too. As for playing guster songs, my RD8C and my current guitar (a Taylor 110e) have sounded fine- I'm not sure what guitar Ryan plays in that video but I have seen them frequently using Gibson acoustic guitars (not sure which models?). Hope this helps

Thank you for your insight. Since the RD8 is a beginner guitar, do you think it will be better for me to get a better guitar?(I'll probably learn pretty quickly since I've already played piano and trumpet for almost 10 years)

Also, should I get an acoustic or an acoustic/electric?

What guitars does Ryan play? What guitar is he playing Satellite on in Episode 3 of Joe's Place?

the guitars that ryan and adam play are definately well out of the range of a beginner guitar...i began on a washburn, and the first guitar i bought myself was the alvarez RD8C which was excellent. going for the models that the guster boys play is not really reasonable considering that'll end up costing you thousands of $$$ instead of hundreds. the RD8 is a good guitar for the price (it shouldn't be more than a few hundred), i'd go for it, just make sure you like it first when you try it out in the store, and take it somewhere to get set right after you buy it

my RD8C is acoustic/electric, but the only time i'm ever plugged in is when i do shows with a friend at a coffee house type setting. whether or not you need an acoustic or an acoustic/electric is dependant upon your own personal needs for the guitar

My first guitar was a Washburn and it was a great first guitar. I had it for about 5 years and the sound was consistently great. I was saving for years for a Martin and I just got one this year.

i think the FAQs go into which guitars each guster plays. my knowledge about guitars is pretty superficial, but i think the alvarez that ryan plays goes for a couple thousand.

I would reccomend a Seagull. They're made in Quebec, so if you live in the States you get a good deal on them due to the exchange rate. I would highly encourage you to make sure you get a solid top though, whatever you do. And really, the best thing to do is just go to a guitar shop and play some of them at the store and see what you like.

I'd second that. Seagulls are great guitars. My next guitar'll be a seagull. For now, I toil away with my trusty Takamine, which plays Guster just fine.

if you can find an older used guild F4CE (pref. from the early 90s, before fender bought them), i'd say that's the way to go. that was my first guitar, and i still play it. (granted, i do play the taylor 615 a little more... ;])

yours,
joe.

Okay, thanks for the input. Does anyone know their Alvarez guitars, because I quite a few that are 100 or 200 dollars more than the RD8 and I don't know if they are worth buying. Can someone give me an overview of the Alvarez's under $500 or a recommendation to buy one Alvarez(under $500) over the $200 RD8?

The RD10C come with cases and run around 2-250. They're basically a step above the RD8 with nice inlays, and laquer finish. The RD8s are kinda junky, they usually need adjustments 3 or 4 times a year. The true working man's Alvarez is the RD20C (which are around 320) but the fusion series offers a thinner body, quilted maple top, and the upgraded electronics for around 500 - 600 dollars.

Since the Alvarez FD60S is thinner, does it sound any different without electronics from the RD20SC or will it sound normal? (because I probably won't ever use an amp...)

16. "RE: Buying a guitar..."
because some reviews say the sound is sort of "thin" when it is not plugged in... (are there any other thin guitars that don't sound thin and are just acoustic(no electronics)?)

If the sound is truly thin, then I might go with an RD20S.

and one more question (sorry):

If I buy a guitar, I can't choose between black or the traditional color... Which color?
