"Question on "FLAC" files"
ok, so i've seen these "flac" files recently on archive.org... and i know that I can download the "flac" plug in for winamp so i can play the "flac" files.

now, here's my situation: when i went to install the plug in, i got a message that said it had an extension type that could damage my system and it asked me if i wanted to open it anyway. i got scared and said no.

does anyone know if there is the potential for bad, scary things to happen to my computer by installing this "flac" plug-in, or is this just a typical cover-all warning that probably won't result in any harm to my computer?

i'm not usually this timid about installing stuff on my system, but i figured this was a good place to pose my question.

maybe i'll start calling them "flac of seagull" files...

thanks in advance!

Alex (folk)

Hm. Where are you downloading the plugin from? Should be ok to use as long as it's from a trusted site...I'm not a PC person so I can't speak to that error message though.

What extension type did it say could damage your system? You might want to check and make sure you have all the Windows hotfixes (isn't that what they're called? updates?). Personally, I'd just back up your important files and try it anyways. If it screws up your system, you can always reformat and reinstall (and with all the excess junk off your hard drive it will run faster). But if you have 30 GB of music that are "important" that might not be so feasible

I don't use winamp so I'm not really sure.

There is a potential for bad, scary things to happen by booting up any Windows machine .

FLAC is just another audio compression method. Similar to SHN. I believe that people claim it is better at compressing, I've never really compared the two. If you go to http://flac.sourceforge.net/ you can dig around there for more info. Assuming you got the plugin from there you should be fine. Hope that helps
