"protest songs"
LAST EDITED ON Apr-12-04 AT 08:21 PM (EST)

erm... yeah... so i'm trying to compile a list of *good* protest songs... for any cause, really.... kinda songs that have a political message focused on peace, or spreading word about issues our planet has.... given, you could take half of the stuff u2's ever written, and there you'd have it. i'm gonna use sunday bloody sunday (as performed by u2 at slane castle, ireland) for them... any others by another artist?? obviously bob marley... i can't really think of any for guster....
i'm doing this so i can subliminally message people at school... j.k.
no, actually, i'm doing a project for history, so it would be kinda good if they had some point to them... other than just, you know, the best of 60's hippie music...

1. "RE: protest songs"
Bob Dylan and Neil Young are a couple of great ones. For more recent stuff, try Rage Against the Machine or even Pearl Jam (Bush Leaguer)...

If you want Guster content, you could always throw in the reverse-protest cover of Flowers - sort of an ironic environmental lament.

Not sure if its exactly what your looking for, but Pink Floyd's "The Wall" has quite a few songs about either WWII or teh Cold War, I'm not sure which one, but theres definitely some political overtones. If you try really hard you can twist "Keep it Together" into a protest against the RIAA...

4. "RE: protest songs"
you could check out stuff by Propaghandi or Black Flag (more of a punk feel to these)... Then there are:
Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, Cat Stevens, Dead Kennedys, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, John LEnnon, system of a down, Billy Bragg, public enemy, some Beastie Boys stuff...

That's a lot of artists, eh? If you would like specific songs for a specific cause, I may be able to help with that.

Good luck.

-Sweet Cheers-

My favorite protest song is "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" by Peter Paul and Mary. Very famous from the 60's and most people recognize it.
Peace, Love, Guster

"Fell across the fall line, Ain't nothin sacred anymore"

AMANDLA! is a really great documentary about the importance and power of music within the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa.
Good luck with your project...

Silent Night - Simon/Garfunkel (during the song, they use audio cuts about the Vietnam war)

many songs by the Clash are highly political, but I can't think of an exact one at the moment

I do not mean to jump in but I thought I could add to your list. There were literally 100's of protest songs from the late 50's through the early 70's. I hope I did not duplicate too many here...

What about "Love Is A Good Thing" by Sheryl Crow?

"Watch out sister watch out brother, watch our children while they kill each other..."

Or "The New Wild West" by Jewel?

"Privelidge has ruled for thousands of years, wars have been fought with bibles and tears, yet liberation can't deny the temptation, soon becomes the oppressor."

21. "RE: protest songs"
Simply Red had a couple of good ones -- "Turn It Up" on the album A New Flame is one of my favorites:

"The growth of the nation cannot be achieved
by keeping the down-trodden down"

"She'll Have to Go" on the same album is a rant against Margaret Thatcher.

A little dated, yes, but still pretty good lyrics.

22. "RE: protest songs"
here's a couple...(even though this topic is unearthed from like months ago)

browbeatingly obvious - "move on" by mike doughty

"yeah i believe the war is wrong
i don't believe that nations can be steered
lead the world with smarts and compassion
by example, not coersion, force and fear"

a little more subtle (maybe?) - "gather" by glen phillips (this is gonna be on the new glen phillips record that comes out in march, but as it stands you can find plenty of live versions on archive.org)

"fight too hard
and this won't bend
lay down your arms
gather your friends
strengthen your heart
and this will end
lay down your arms
gather your friends"

"oh god will you hear my cry?
i don't wanna see another innocent die(on either side)
dive down inside these depths
keep my faith and hold my breath"

word,
joe.
