On Saturday, November 28th, Calling All Crows will host a care package assembly party at Brooklyn Bowl to benefit soldiers serving overseas this holiday season. The service event is free, open to the public, and will include performances by members of Guster, fun., State Radio, and Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers– all on stage at Brooklyn Bowl!

Live music fans in NYC for Thanksgiving Weekend are asked to arrive with care package donations (see list of items below). Volunteers will write letters to troops, thank them for their service, and pack the notes with care packages to be shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan in time for the holiday season. Cash donations will also be collected to help offset international shipping costs.

Billboard recently interviewed Adam Gardner about the upcoming "Lost and Gone Forever" tour and the new Guster songs. Here's the link for you: Billboard.com.

Willie Nelson and the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance recognize environmental visionaries Adam Gardner & Lauren Sullivan of Reverb by presenting them with the 2009 SBA Visionary Award.  

Since 2008 the SBA has honored an individual and an organization for their efforts in the field of sustainability, through biodiesel.  Last year's recipients were the City of Portland, OR and City Commissioner Randy Leonard.  This year's award was presented to Adam and Lauren for their work with their environmental non-profit Reverb.  A visionary award was also presented to www.nearbio.com.  

The SBA is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 to develop standards for sustainability in the biodiesel industry and for public education on how sustainable biodiesel can help the US move towards a sustainable energy future.  

Reverb educates and engages musicians and their fans alike to take action toward a more sustainable future, through their website reverbrock.org and through work with music tours, like Guster's Campus Consciousness Tour.  To date Reverb has helped tours source over 376,000 gallons of biodiesel and prevented over 62,000 tons of carbon from being released into the atmosphere.  Since 2004, Reverb has worked on over 70 major tours and 1,100 events, helped artists and fans reduce or eliminate over 62,000 tons of CO2, fueled trucks and buses with over 375,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel, hosted 1,700 environmental groups in their interactive Eco-Village, and reached over 8 million fans.

It's been ten years since we released Lost & Gone Forever, the album that put us on peoples' radars, helped us graduate from our van to a bus, and taught me to fill my finger cuts with krazy glue.

To celebrate, we're turning the clock back to 1999 and announcing the Lost & Gone Forever Ten Year Anniversary Tour -- 9 very special evenings with Guster. No opener. Two sets, one of which will be the album in its entirety. Yes, even Two Points for Honesty and Rainy Day. I haven't decided if we should play the album in order or in shuffle mode. Any thoughts?

Some facts about the album, mangled together in one chunky paragraph with no flow:

* Produced by Steve Lillywhite, who was our #1, I Can't Believe He Said Yes, dream producer choice. We played Woodstock '99 right before the album came out, well before we were ready to play a show that big, and mere hours before people set the place on fire. The Barenaked Ladies liked the album and brought us on tour with them, thus doubling the size and Canadian-ness of our following. Karl Denson played sax on Fa Fa, one take, that was it. There were no drum sticks used on the album, only hand drums, and I said so in the liner notes -- Ryan would later make fun of me for including this detail in the album package. We recently found another band's album with the same cover photo of the boy throwing the big rock on the piano. Paige from Phish played theremin on All the Way Up to Heaven. We almost didn't put Happier on the record. What You Wish For and Rainy Day were featured in the movie "Life as a House," which is about cancer. When we toured with Ben Folds in the summer of 2004 he made All the Way Up to Heaven sound so good with his piano chops we never played the song again after that.

Some facts about the above tour dates:

This will be the only real Guster headlining tour of 2009. There are no west coast dates, or Texas dates. The only shows near the midwest are two dates in Ohio. The only show in the south is in Charlotte NC. For those of you who find this tour appealing but live in places we're not visiting, we feel your pain. We are visiting some venues of historical significance -- Higher Ground in Vermont, though in a new location now, was where we launched the original Lost & Gone Forever tour. The Orpheum, in Boston, was where we put on an epic Halloween show ten years ago where we wore tuxes and pretended it was New Year's Eve, Y2K. The Beacon in New York, while a relatively new venue for us, harkens back to a time when we played Thanksgiving Weekend in NYC five years in a row. We encourage you all to get your tickets early as these shows will probably sell out... you can get tickets here, on sale Friday July 17th:

It's festival season, Gusterrhoids!

That means we're playing with Skynyrd and the Doobie Brothers on Sunday in Alabama (no kidding). And playing a free set after Rusted Root in Atlanta this Saturday night (wait, are *we* a nostalgia band too?) ... and playing in Mississippi for the first time in ten years on Friday.

So come on and out and see us. And Lynyrd Skynyrd. By the way, anyone know the over/under on how long "Sweet Home Alabama" runs when it's actually played *in* Alabama? I said twelve minutes, but other people tell me fifteen's a safe bet. I know when we play "Ramona" in the state of Oklahoma we jam that shit out for twenty sometimes.

They're all weekend festivals, as far as I can tell. Levon Helm of The Band goes on after us in Bridgeport, and we'll be the ones obnoxiously pushing our way through the crowd to get to the front row for his set, stepping on heels and spilling beers if necessary to get there.

Hi from the road. It's good to be back, but we're easing into it slowly over here. One song, played extra fast, last week for the REM tribute gig in New York. Two songs (one new, one old) this Thursday night for a fundraiser on a docked boat. By April when the Gusbus is visiting colleges and universities around the country we'll be up to full speed, and even playing "just one more song" if people keep clapping after the last one that's written on the set list. This summer we'll be playing our instruments in July here and there.

1. CLOTHING DRIVES... Most shows on this tour we will be hosting clothing drives along with Reverb and Planet Aid. What better way to recycle? Bring out any clothes, shoes, bedding, and even soft toys that you don't use and we'll make sure they find homes where they're needed. 2. DAYTIME ACTIVITIES WITH MEMBERS OF GUSTER... Most accessible band ever! We're working with local student groups to put together daytime activities on campus that may or may not include bocce. Biodiesel Workshops and Eco-Classroom Takeovers are in the plans, and we're open to your ideas as well. Send us suggestions.

3. SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER... We're looking for a few solid eco-volunteers to help out at each show in exchange for showers of gratitude. Click HERE to sign up.

We're coming out from under our rock.

The album's not exactly finished, but we're coming out from under our rock (to rock) anyway. Here's what's on tap, patient Gusterrhoids:

March 11th -- Tribute to REM at Carnegie Hall, NYC. 20 bands playing one REM song each. We chose a lovely and rather obscure number off of our favorite REM record, Murmur. Other acts on the bill include Bob Mould, Patti Smith, Calexico, Kimya Dawson, and The Feelies. The Feelies! Who's with me!? This will be our first performance on stage together in almost a year and a half... it's three and a half minutes, but if you're an REM fan you might not want to miss it. TICKETS. INFO.

March 26th -- Safely docked in San Pedro CA, we're playing a VH-1 Save The Music benefit with John Mayer, Gavin Rossdale, DJ Logic, and others aboard a Carnival cruise ship. It's a short acoustic set for a great cause (music education). Glycerine! TICKETS. INFO.

March 27th -- We set sail on the Mayercraft Carrier with John Mayer & Friends. This will be our second performance on stage together in almost a year and a half, and our first one performing Guster songs (new and old). Add dangerous undulating tides into the mix and it's sure to be an event you don't want to miss. We're going to Jamaica or Barbados or something. TICKETS. INFO.

APRIL -- College tour with Adam's Campus Consciousness tents in tow. We'll be getting our land legs back, literally and figuratively, at various institutions of academia around the country over the month of April. The Stubbs gig is a benefit for a local Texas environmental group. And speaking of environmental groups, the Reverb kids are back this time with more eco-goodness for another Campus Consciousness Tour. They're stepping it up with Daytime Activities, Clothing Drives, and contests for autographed guitars, a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's, and a chance to watch Joe eat an entire bag of Doritos backstage. The Joe/Dorito thing isn't so much a contest as much as it is a spectacle. Tickets and information are all available on the Tour Dates section of our website. As for the album we spent 2008 writing and 2009 recording, we are still working on it, and it will definitely be the best group of songs we've released yet. I make no promises as for release dates, as I once promised to keep an active studio journal and that didn't work out so good. It was the splash page! Too much pressure! Perhaps the road journal, or my new favorite activity, Twistering, will rekindle my devotion to the blogosphere.

Greetings from the couch behind the sound board in the control room of the studio where our band is hard at work on studio album #6. Still untitled. I have begun to document the recording process in a studio blog thru Tumblr, and today I noticed that guster.com has transformed itself into a giant splash page celebrating the one journal entry I've squeezed out so far. There are more to come.

We've got a major election coming up, so if you're not registered to vote, for the love of God let our band direct you to a place where you can do that. The deadline for voter registration is October 4th in many states.

And though we hadn't expected to play live again this year, we're going to be performing Tuesday October 7th at a fundraiser for Barack Obama at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn NY. The concert was put together by Brian's wife Megan and features an awesome line-up of bands and comedians. The order of performers is random and we're likely to play a 5 song acoustic set (with a few new songs in the mix too if we can write the lyrics by then).

Another Guster email announcement. Another baby girl.

Ryan and Angela's daughter, Lionelle Rosalie Miller, arrived June 16th. The third (and final) Guster-girl of the year, Leo weighed 7 pounds and 14 ounces at birth. Her photo is up on the road journal, along with pictures of her friends Jolene Rosenworcel and Sloan Gardner.

Despite all the procreation, we've been putting the finishing touches on about 17 new songs this summer and we ought to begin recording them in a month. For those of you keeping score at home, we've moved from Reprise/Warner Brothers Records to Aware/Columbia Records. Expect a new album in early oh nine.

And those of you hoping to stalk Scooter this summer can find him traveling the world greening tours by Jack Johnson and DMB for Adam's environmental non-profit, REVERB. We've got another baby girl to welcome into the ever-expanding Guster family. Sloan Sullivan Gardner, the sleeping/pooping/burping by-product of Adam and his wife Lauren's love, joined us on May 16th. There's a beautiful photo up on the road journal, which is really just a baby announcement journal this year. We've got another Guster baby due this month.

Meanwhile we've found time to write a big batch of new songs and we can't wait to record them. This summer? We'll have to see how it all balances with the newcomers. But we expect to have an album finished this year and a tour ready to go in early oh nine.

Gusterrhoids -- We've been a distant and incommunicative rock band over the past few months, and for that we apologize. Or should I say I apologize, as it's really me, the drummer, the Rosenworcel, who's the gatekeeper of the band email list. And in this time of music and babies and email communication, I allowed certain offspring to take precedence over others. Forgive me, there is much to celebrate:

My daughter Jolene was born February 6th, and I've been slowly redefining my relationship with sleep and poop ever since. While there may be an influx of diaper-themed road journals on our website when we tour again, for now I've put a photo of my sweet little girl up there, to linger until the next Guster baby arrives in May, followed by a third Guster baby in June. Oh yeah! Now-is-the-time-in-Guster-when-we-make-humans!

But we're also well into the gestation process of another album, as we spent the winter working up songs on a slightly out of tune upright piano in Brooklyn. And believe you me it's not shaping up to be the mellow dad-rock album you might expect from a band of expecting band members. We're keeping it up. We're rollicking if not rocking. There's still time to write a bunch of sappy lyrics about daddyhood.

So this is what's on our plate. Make more babies. Make an album. Eventually play our instruments live again but not for a while. Remember to check in every now and then with the people out there who remember us well. Many thanks for sticking with us, life is good over here.

Exciting holiday announcements, Gusterrhoids!

1) The Joe's Place DVD is now online as a pre-order link. Also known as "D.F. Yonkman's Greatest Hits," also known as "Guster Can't Act for Shit," this is a collection of our Joe's Place episodes, bonus Joe's Place footage, and many other video collaborations between our band and our friend Dave's camera. It's 8 bucks.

2) But that's not all! Among our exciting holiday announcements is this one: We can't promise it'll reach you before Christmas, like we expected. There was a little hang-up at the printing plant, so we still think it's likely your Joe's Place DVD will show up by Christmas morning, but no guarantees. Those of you who have been banking on this as a gift idea will surely enjoy the ass-covering "this DVD is on its way to you" card we've made available for you to print off of our website.

3) There's a Guster Holiday Calendar website. I don't quite understand it, but it appears that we're clearing out our merchandise inventory by making one item available at a huge clearance price every day from now until Christmas. So you visit every day, and it tells you the daily special. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

4) Adam has a lot of holiday-themed stuff going on. His Chhannukkahh band, The LeeVees, are currently touring temples across the USA, and he's playing a benefit show with Stefan from DMB and Ed from BNL at the Pickle Barrel in Killington VT on January 9th. The band is called Yukon Kornelius and tickets are available here.

5) We're writing songs right now... which means a Guster album is only a few years away! (Or maybe sooner).

Hello. Gusterrhoids.

Last night Ryan and I attended the "MTVU Woodie Awards" and much to our surprise we won the award we were up for (the "Good Woodie" -- or the band with the greatest social impact). A spontaneous and very awkward acceptance speech at the podium is what followed, and while I'm pretty sure I thanked "Spank Rock" for an inspiring performance, I wish I'd remembered to thank our fans who voted for us online and especially Adam, who made a big splash greening the way bands tour this year with his non-profit, Reverb.

So another long touring season is behind us. Thanks to everyone for coming to our rock concerts and keeping our engine running. Much was accomplished during the Ganging Up on the Sun era. Adam learned how to play trumpet, live on stage in front of people. A 16 year old named "Scooter" became the most popular member of our band. We broke three sets of bocce balls before we discovered the plastic kind, and I learned how to create web-based graphic email newsletters with images, colors, embedded videos, and flash animation. No I didn't.

This holiday season we have one last item to promote before we leave you alone in 2008 and go write songs. It's our self-released Joe's Place DVD (for those of you who aren't familiar with our very own reality sitcom, check out Episode 2 where Ryan tries to feed peanut butter to a snake in Joe's front yard) .... since it's way too controversial for stores it'll only be available through our website. And the Joe's Place DVD is not just a collection of episodes that our friend Dave (I mean D.F.) Yonkman created while we were recording at Joe's house in Nashville a couple of years ago. It's more like Dave (I mean D.F.) Yonkman's Greatest Hits Reel. Here come the bullet points! It's got:

THUNDERGOD NOT CRUISING

Those of you going on the Ships & Dip BNL Cruise in January are in for a unique Guster performance. Brian's not going to make the trip as he's *expecting something* that week, but Tyler and Andy from the Barenaked Ladies are going to fill in, with aplomb. And panache. And percussion. There'll also be a special private acoustic show by the three other Gusters for everyone that marked "Guster" as the reason they're cruising. Both of you.

We're thrilled that Tyler and Andy are stepping up to fill in. The other option was a "Thundergod for a Day" video contest, but that would have gotten ugly. There will be more news forthcoming in your next Ships & Dip email newsletter.

Soon our band will have more in common with Willie Nelson than just our love for organically-enhanced diesel fuels. We will be sharing the stage together in New York City on September 9th as a part of this year's Farm Aid concert at Randall's Island, which benefits small farmers in the United States.

And by "sharing the stage together" I don't just mean one of us playing after the other. I mean one of us playing a good six hours after the other. Good news is you have Neil Young, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, Matisyahu, John Mellencamp, and lots of others to entertain you inbetween. And you're performing a mitzvah if you attend. As Mellencamp says: "If people eat, they should come out and support Farm Aid."

Hello (Gusterrhoids) from somewhere above Iceland on the way home from our week in London. We had a lovely time over the pond. We ate mushy peas, released an album, detected more British accents in the crowd than American ones, and have already begun to schedule a return trip for the fall. For those of you on this list who don't happen to live in the UK, check out the following developments on our summer tour in the USA. There's almost something for everyone:

AUGUST 18 -- We'll be co-headlining the Download Festival along with Modest Mouse at the Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts in Mansfield MA. We've wanted to play this venue ever since we saw Neil Young & Crazy Horse bring the house down in 1997 when it was called "Great Woods." Tickets go on sale June 16th.

JULY 28 -- Our Northampton MA show at the end of July is turning into something of a Guster-curated festival with music all day -- right now the lineup includes Guster, Ben Kweller, State Radio, and (from Chico, CA) Trippin' Balls. More entertainment might be added too. Our manager has dubbed it "Mump Camp" because he wishes in his heart of hearts that we would have named our last two albums "Mump Camp" -- instead he'll have to settle for a festival in Western Mass. No one will contract the mumps if they attend this concert (bring a lime if you wish to avoid the scurvy though).

JULY 25 -- The Orange County Fair gig where we thought we were opening for Cake now appears to be Toad the Wet Sprocket opening for Guster instead. Come on down to Costa Mesa CA and watch us headline, yes?

JULY 22 & 23 -- Our two shows with Ben Kweller at the Minneapolis Zoo sold out very quickly. Tickets just went on sale for the rest of the summer shows, so we recommend getting tickets early if you plan to attend. Here's the schedule along with the ticketing links:

PEOPLE WHO LIKE MUSIC: We've put a new song named "G Major" up on our myspace page. It's not so new to us, actually, since we recorded it at Joe's house during the sessions for Ganging Up on the Sun, but it won't officially be released until Tuesday April 10th when our Satellite EP comes out in stores. You can visit our website for details about the EP or stream the whole thing (8 songs!) for free at Rhapsody right now.

PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO SAVE MONEY IN SAN FRANCISCO: We're playing "KaBoom" this year... it's a KFOG festival happening May 12th on Piers 30/32 and it's only $10. We're sandwiched between Ozomatli and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, for those of you who like both kinds of music. Like in years past there's a massive fireworks show after the concert, but unlike years past, there's a limited number of tickets available this time.

PEOPLE WHO DISLIKE THE FACT THAT WE NEVER COME TO THE U.K. AND EMAIL ME ABOUT IT EVERY WEEK: "Ganging Up on the Sun" comes out in England June 4th on Rykodisc Records. To celebrate, we're coming to England on June 4th too. We're planning to set up a couple of shows out there, and we'll know more about it in next week's emailer. Tell your British friends!

PEOPLE WHO LIKE RYAN MILLER: He's blogging again on our website. I suppose I could have gone with "PEOPLE WHO DISLIKE THE ROAD JOURNAL" for this one, but it's not a mutually exclusive thing. Ryan's writing about music and current events in his new guslog 2.0 -- check it out.

PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO READ MAGAZINES AND WATCH MOVIES: Next week you'll have two opportunities to encounter our band while engaging in your favorite pasttimes. The Newsweek that comes out on April 9th is running a bit about our efforts to green up our tours, and the horror movie "Disturbia" that comes out April 13th will feature "One Man Wrecking Machine" somewhere towards the end.

PEOPLE WHO LIKE THINGS THEY PAID FOR TO SHOW UP ON TIME: Um. Yeah. Bad week for you guys. Those of you who pre-ordered the Satellite EP might be receiving those on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, instead of on Tuesday like we promised. There was a manufacturing problem that held things up. The good news is everyone's getting extra stickers in their packages, on the house. Sorry for the delay.

Guster's stop-motion animated video for "One Man Wrecking Machine," the first single off of their current studio album "Ganging Up on the Sun," has been nominated for three MVPA Awards (Music Video Producers Association), including Best Vid under $25k, Best Animated Video, and Best Directorial Debut. The visually childlike, playful video directed by Drew Lightfoot (Corpse Bride) tells the story of a social misfit (“played” by a necktie-wearing plush puppet) who makes good and stitches his torn cloth world back together.

What did you think "soy ink" was made of?

Gusterrhoids. We're proud to announce the upcoming release of a new album of-sorts, the 8-song Satellite EP. When we wrote and recorded "Ganging Up on the Sun" we ended up with surplus material and difficult decisions about what to include on the record. Battles were fought. Band members won. Band members lost. This new EP helps us share some of our favorite album rejects with you, along with remixes, rare covers, and a vocal interpretation from yours truly (this is Brian again, special thanks to Adam for filling in last week with the Guster Green Update Issue #0000000001). Bullet Point 1. As those of you followed the studio journal know, this is only half of Guster's current b-side treasury. The rest of the album rejects will hopefully see the light of day some time in the near future too.

Bullet Point 2. The Satellite EP is entirely carbon-neutral. The carbon emissions from the manufacturing process have been offset with renewable energy credits, and the ink used on the package was soy ink. Go Adam, go!

Bullet Point 3. You might recognize that "I'm Through" has a very familiar verse melody ... the song was discarded and used for parts and eventually re-built into "C'mon." We thought you might like a small window into our songwriting process. Enjoy that small window.

WE'RE PLAYING ON A CRUISE SHIP WITH BNL AGAIN IN 2008

You may notice a slightly different writing style in this emailer. Don't worry--Brian hasn't lost his touch-- it's just me, Adam, writing to you to give you all the latest info on what our band has been up to environmentally. I will admit up front that the witty writing chops that seem to effortlessly fly out of our esteemed congeurro's fingertips do not come so easily to my otherwise guitar strumming hands.

Enough self-deprecation--here's what we've been doing...

12 Month Recap
Since our launch of last year's Campus Consciousness Tour, every concert has been "carbon neutral" by purchasing renewable energy offsets that bring new clean energy sources onto the power grid. We've also been filling up our tour bus with biodiesel, a clean-burning, domestically-made, vegetable oil-based fuel.

Through these two efforts alone, Guster has reduced and neutralized our global warming emissions by:

2,100 TONS of CO2
= not driving 4.2 MILLION miles
= powering 262 homes for an entire year with wind power.

After realizing how easy and effective this was, we have been furthering our greening efforts and will be greener than ever for this coming Campus Consciousness Tour...

What's Reverb? My wife, Lauren Sullivan, and I started Reverb in 2004 with the mission to green artists’ tours and the music business at large while raising awareness and support for the environment through the powerful connection between musicians and their fans. In addition to Guster, we help green many bands including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, Dave Matthews Band, and Sheryl Crow.

We're in the midst of booking a spring tour that'll take us to your colleges, and we're anchoring that tour with two weekends playing music in the two nicest theaters of New York and Boston. Watch this:

April 13th & 14th --- Two nights at the Beacon Theater in NYC
April 20th & 21st --- Two nights at the Boston Opera House in, um, Boston MA

The sheer majesty of these venues will offset every gymnasium we've ever played where they duct tape a blue tarp to the floor so you don't track mud onto the basketball court. We plan to have special guests, unique set lists, and plenty of costume changes. Mason Jennings opens the Friday night shows in each city and The Format open the Saturday night shows in each city. Beware, these venues are small and these shows are likely to sell out, so we encourage you to get tickets ($35) as soon as they go on sale this Saturday:

And we're happy to announce that this time our song is actually the lead-off track, after landing deep in the batting order on the Randy Newman tribute record (9th out of 12) and even deeper in the batting order on the Daniel Johnston tribute record (17th out of 18). The song we covered is called "This Wheel's On Fire," written by Rick Danko and Bob Dylan in 1967 and available on The Band's "Music From Big Pink" album. The other artists on the compilation are all over the map. SCOOTER-FOR-A-DAY CONTEST RULES HAVE CHANGED

1) You have an extension. The submission deadline has been pushed back to December 10th, with a winner chosen on Dec 12th.
2) Because you spoke, and because we sometimes listen, the contest is now ALL AGES and the prizes have been adjusted:

 a. Winner can choose to go on the cruise with a passenger of their choice if winner and friend are both 21+
 b. If winner is under 21, winner can still choose to go on the cruise as long as they are accompanied by someone 25 years or older
 c. Winners under 21, who can not attend the cruise, can instead choose to go to a show of their choice (this will include airfare and hotel if need be)

BAD NEWS: Tomorrow's show in Salt Lake City, UT is cancelled, as Adam Gardner is still recovering from a miserable three-week bout with pneumonia. Refunds will be given at the point of purchase.

GOOD NEWS: Those of you coming to the Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas NV this weekend will get a chance to see Adam sweat through three shirts in the course of a one hour set! What could be sexier than an emaciated, feverish man with a guitar having the schvitz of his life in the desert?

Guster won Album of the Year (Major) last night at the Boston Music Awards! Thanks to everyone that voted for us.

Here's the deal with the "collaboration" between Curb Your Enthusiasm and Guster I hinted at a few weeks ago:  It's not a Season Six band cameo on the show.  I wish.  But it's the next best thing, a five-episode podcast of a long, winding conversation between two Guster members (the singer and the drummer) and our friend Jeff Garlin, who plays Larry's agent on the show.  

If you have people in your life who like Curb Your Enthusiasm but don't know Guster, this is your chance to get them hooked on our.... conversational... skills?  Having befriended Jeff at our Central Park show two years ago, we thought a mutual podcast would be interesting since we like his comedy and he likes our music.  Around the time we were finishing up "Ganging Up on the Sun" we actually went into the studio with Jeff and recorded it.  A lot of topics get covered since it's almost an hour long.  This might be the deepest Guster interview to date.  Don't fear the podcast. 

A ten-minute episode will become available, for free, every Monday in October, on our website and through iTunes.  I am told there are five mondays in October this year.  Anyway, you can rest assured that we'll remind you about this next week.  On to the tour dates...

Hello from back-on-the-road. Texas. We're ready for our red-hot Friday afternoon slot at the Austin City Limits Festival tomorrow. If you're attending the festival this weekend, and tired of watching bands from the middle of a field, you can come see us play a more intimate show late Friday night with Gomez at La Zona Rosa (details below).

Five (5) other touring developments:

1. We added an Ohio show to this tour to make up for our cancelled ones this summer. It's November 8th at PromoWest Pavilion in Columbus. We realize that people in Cleveland and Pittsburgh still hate us. We can not return the feeling. We have nothing but love for Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

2. Another pillar in the career of Guster will fall when we open for Kansas at a free show in Iowa next month. It's in Iowa City, where we used to play a lot in the mid-nineties. Back when we were wayward sons, carrying on in a van. {Insert your favorite 'dust in the wind' joke here}.

3. Speaking of Kansas, our Kansas City show on September 22nd has been moved from the outdoor "City Market" to the fabulous indoor "Beaumont Club," where there's a mechanical bull. Come on down, even if you're coming to the freebie in Columbia on the 20th. We know K.C. is in Missouri.

4. West Virginia!

Hello Gusterrhoids:

Everybody loves Ray LaMontagne! But he's dropping off the tour in September, due to "unforeseen conflicts in his schedule." Here's the official word from his camp:

Ray LaMontagne regretfully has to cancel his participation in the second leg of his co-headlining tour with Guster due to unforeseen conflicts in his schedule. There are also a few midwest dates that are affected during the first leg. He enjoyed the first leg with Guster and is disappointed he can't continue at this time but is looking forward to returning to the road soon.

It's too bad, since the shows so far have really been great and we've been flattered to be on the same stage with someone as talented as Ray. More bad news: The shows in Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburgh have been cancelled (8/4, 8/5, 8/6). Full refunds are available from the point of purchase, and we hope to make it up to Ohio on our next tour. Kettering and Toledo are still on though! Bring your cornhole bags!

AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS:

Nada Surf are taking Ray's place as opener, along with Tristan Prettyman, for the second leg beginning in mid-September. Everybody loves Nada Surf! Most ticket prices have been adjusted to reflect Ray's departure (meaning, they're cheaper now), and some venues have been switched as a result too. Here are some recent developments in our touring world:

Gusterrhoids! This first week of having-an-album-out-again has been a lot of fun. Thanks for all your nice emails about Ganging Up on the Sun and the Leno appearance, and thanks especially for helping us debut at #25 on the Billboard Album Sales charts -- just 167 units behind Nickelback at #24. Nickelback!! Next week we plan to drop off the charts but thanks to you guys we always make impressive debuts...

"Keep It Together" came out three years ago, on June 24th, 2003. There was a lot of anticipation since it took so long to write and record, and the day it was finally released, I put out one of these here email announcements with what I considered the most brilliant, ironic, and playfully subversive subject line in the history of Guster emailer subject lines:

My anti-climactic genius was lost on some people at our record label, who still haven't forgiven me (like, they think some people here *never* found out about Keep It Together because they only skim the subjects or something). WE RELEASED SOMETHING

i think that our hectic touring schedules and grass-roots style of development once led people to consider us a "jam band" even though we can't improvise a lick and generally write three and a half minute pop songs. now that it's 2006 and we're secure with our pop identities, we're playing the 6th annual jammy awards on april 20th in new york city -- it's an awards show for jam bands that combines older legends with younger bands (we fall in the "younger bands" category even though we're in our thirties). we'll be a part of a two-song collaboration where we'll play one guster song (probably one from the new album), and one song backing up the legend we're paired with, and his talk box. we can't say who it is but some of you out there are feeling me...

We'll be debuting "Joe's Place" in a few weeks at guster.com -- this is our little sitcom that Dave Yonkman created from the hundreds of thousands of hours of studio footage he shot in the last year or so. (That's means he had to sift through like a million billion terabytes of information). In the meantime, we've posted some cute promos for the show on our website. The goal is to unveil a new episode every two weeks or so until our album comes out on June 20th. Those of you with video iPods or "computers" will be able to download them through the iTunes music store eventually. So like I said, our album comes out on June 20th! It's called "Ganging Up on the Sun" and these days I'm comfortable capitalizing the "G" in "Ganging," the "U" in "Up," and the "S" in "Sun," while leaving the "o" in "on" and the "t" in "the" lowercase. Feel free to request it and see what happens. The album version has been uploaded to our myspace site: www.myspace.com/guster and the single version is available today at the iTunes music store. The album version has a 40 second masturbatory intro that the single version doesn't have. The single version has a wholesome electric guitar in the first verse that the album version doesn't have. There's also a b-side to the single, an up-tempo number called "The New Underground," over at iTunes.

And finally, as we often do when we've been off the road a little while... we're going back on the road. The tour dates have all been announced but never this neatly. All of the dates are part of our "Campus Consciousness Tour" idea.  To explain what that means, I need to paste in something that Guster's very own Adam Gardner wrote about it:

For the first time since 1995, we won't be able to refer to our tour bus as the "Earth-Eater"--with the help of the National Biodiesel Board, it will be running on biodiesel.  Thanks to the folks at NativeEnergy, we will also be offsetting our carbon emissions with wind power.  There will be a bunch of cool activities ranging from a "Pimp My Clean Ride Car Show" to community service workshops and projects throughout the tour.  At each concert there will be a "Consciousness Pavilion" hosted by eco-friendly companies, Clif and Luna Bar.  Here you can learn about wind power, biodiesel, sign up for a service learning project, and grab a sample of an organic energy bar.  In addition, there will be a food drive at every show, signed guitars you can win, and opportunities to "meet Guster."  To learn more about all of the stuff happening on the Campus Consciousness Tour, go to www.CampusConsciousness.org.

By no means does our involvement in the Campus Consciousness Tour mean we will begin playing long, extended, meandering solos in every song on the spring tour.  I don't know where you got that idea.

Question.

If this, the first Guster emailer of 2006, were to arrive in shocking full technological splendor, a graphic dreamcoat of embedded images, large colorful fonts, and hyper-active links, would you consider that a good thing or would you miss the old days where the drummer was still figuring out how to use "tabs" and stuff?  In other words, let me know when it's no longer endearing.  I'm on some other bands' email lists and I know we're not exactly cutting edge.

I bring it up because things are picking up over here.  Your pleasant little hiatus from Guster news is through, and we're about to come at you with a fury of information, tour dates, and new music this year.  We're even going to have six episodes of our own making-of-the-album reality sitcom to broadcast from our website soon.  Strap on Kyle, let's ride!

First things first.  The record will be called GANGING UP ON THE SUN and it's coming out June 13th on Reprise Records.  You won't have to wait that long to hear music though -- "Manifest Destiny" is already up on our myspace site, and other tracks will be seeping out to the public through digital singles, EP's, videos, and online jukeboxes over the next few months.  The only thing left for us to do on the album is sequence the order of the songs, and we plan to drag that process out as long as possible.

Second things second.  The Gusbus (now fueled with biodiesel!) is ready to take us, and our instruments, to you.  The tour begins next month on the west coast.

After these dates we're heading to the midwest and east coast for some college shows, taking a little break, and then gearing up for our album release.  We'll be bringing a small eco-village with us on this tour, promoting alternative energy, social justice, community service projects, food drives, and soy! soy! soy! Maybe not so much soy.  But thanks to Adam and his wife's organization, Reverb, we will be launching our first "Campus Consciousness Tour"... be sure to check it out if you can make it to a show this spring.

MANIFEST DESTINY / SORORITY TEARS

We're about a month away from releasing a digital single on iTunes... for 99 cents you'll be able to download "Manifest Destiny / Sorority Tears" -- a hybrid of two new songs for one low price. By putting a slash in the title and cross-fading the music, we got our record label to agree to pretend it was just one song. "Manifest Destiny" will be on the new album, and contains a swear word. Parents be advised.

THURSDAY 10/27 "WARM-UP SHOW" IN NASHVILLE:

It's a free block party at 1201 Villa Place to mark the opening of our management's new office in Nashville, where the recently-wedded Michael "Pasty" Corcoran will talk on the telephone, shuffle his fantasy sports line-ups, and otherwise live off the road. Originally conceived as a chance to "warm up" for our tour, our set time seems to be shrinking along with the temperature. When we go on at 8pm it might be 40 degrees outside and we'll be lucky to survive a 40-minute set.

Guster recommendation: Bundle up, bring a flask, but don't travel from out of town. The Thundergod may chicken out on this one.

We've added new shows in Baltimore MD and Ithaca NY to our fall tour, plus three new college dates in the Northeast. Looks like the schedule's complete now, and you can scroll on down to the bottom of this message to check out the full list.

Many of you Gusterrhoids flared up when we announced these shows, demanding "west coast tours" and "some love for the state of Florida" and "better music." We here at Guster hear your complaints and are working to resolve them. The six songs we're currently recording are shoe-ins for the new album, which we hope to release and support in a very geographically-thorough way early next year. In the meantime our studio and road journals will resume shortly and there's plenty of touring news below...

So between now and the start of the tour, we'll be at the weddings of Ryan Miller and Michael "Pasty" Corcoran (separate weddings)... as well as recording a new batch of 7 songs that we hope to introduce on this next tour. I know it's been a while since we've released music to you, but there's a lot forthcoming. You can't handle it all!

2. The first ever Rosenworcel-produced record just came out on Tuesday. "Sam Champion" is the name of the band, "Slow Rewind" is the name of the record, and "Noah Chernin" is the name of the former-Guster-rep-turned-indie-rock-idol who fronts the group. Neglected atrophying Gusterrhoids...

Please forgive our extended absence from your lives. We've been locked in a room without windows, again, preparing another batch of songs that will ultimately bring the number of recorded-but-still-unreleased tunes in our back pocket up to twenty (20). One way or another, these songs will find their way onto your iPods in due time. The plan is to get the proper full length Guster album out early next year, and maybe a five-song EP of delightful album rejects out in time for the holidays.

But the plan is also to tour a bit, on the heels of this recording session and, coincidentally, on the heels of yet another Guster member's wedding (speculate people, speculate)... so it's with great pleasure that I announce a big fall tour! Combing the Northeast and the Midwest, sprinkling fresh songs on... sprinkled people.

The tour will be from mid-October to mid-November, and will culminate with our first proper New York City headliners since Radio City Music Hall show in 2003:

We finished making our album today. Sort of. There's still a song to mix, but for all intents and purposes it's done and for all intents and purposes we love it dearly. What sort of broad statements can I make about it in a mass email announcement, five months before it's hopeful release date? We really went for it this time. We had our best batch of songs yet and our most positive recording experience yet. It's our first album as a four-piece band, and our first self-produced effort. We're going on tour tomorrow. Just a coincidence that we finished making the album today, the day before we leave for a tour. We didn't cut any corners I swear. So we'll be trying to play these songs at colleges for the next few weeks. Check out the ever-growing list of spring dates at the bottom of this message.

Pasty has left the building. Our beloved tour manager of 6 years, the mythical Guster-Rep-turned-most-popular-crew-member-of-all-time doesn't want to be on the road anymore. We'll miss him terribly, except for the foot fungus thing that he never did kick, even with prescription toe medication. Guster & The Boston Pops Orchestra June 22nd & 23rd. Holy shit. Someone really made this happen!? We're playing a set with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, two nights in a row in June. New songs, old songs, second violins, timpani, etc. You have the choice between cheap tickets and really expensive tickets, depending on how close you want to be to Keith Lockhart and the Thunderman. Extended Version of Keep It Together Coming Out in the UK. On May 16th, Keep It Together will get a long overdue UK release on the Fenway Recordings label. To celebrate, we've attached the two songs from the KIT sessions that didn't make the original cut -- "Say That To My Face" and "Starless Heaven." And with that piece of news, the British will no longer be the first ones to hear our new tunes performed live.  That frightening privilege belongs to the distinguished student body of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, because as soon as the album's done we're celebrating with a two week college tour!  Most shows are open to the public, but all shows are in the Midwest!  No more will we hide our love for the Midwestern people behind a superficial veneer of token concerts in other regions!  We're out!

Big news for those of you who've been waiting for a price break before you picked up our DVD! A much cheaper, DVD-only version of "Guster On Ice" was released today in stores, we are told. In other news, welcome to the Guster Offseason, and thanks for making the KIT touring era so damn special for us. We're holing up in a rehearsal space in Brooklyn to write songs for the rest of the year -- an album will hopefully be recorded in early '05 and released next summer. We recorded a song called "The Sun Shines Down On Me" for the upcoming Daniel Johnston tribute album, which is due in stores September 21st on Gammon Records. The album is called "The Late, Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered, Covered," even though Daniel Johnston's not dead. What a wonderfully ironic title. Since most people are unfamiliar with his work, the album will be a two-disc set, one disc of covers, one disc of Daniel's original versions.

And as huge fans of Daniel Johnston's songwriting, we encourage you to check this one out. Proceeds benefit Daniel Johnston, who is not dead, but is in a difficult situation, medically and financially. Other artists on the compilation include Beck, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie and The Eels.

TWO WICKED PIANISTS

It's true, this summer we're going on tour with Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright, two wicked pianists who we listen to in our spare time... it's a triple-headliner, so everyone will play an hour a night and the order of the bands will change every show, though the line-ups will be announced ahead of time. We recommend getting tickets in advance when they go on sale (mostly this weekend) because the shows might sell out.
